Microsoft Shuts Down MSN Messenger

After 15 years of service, Microsoft has officially planned to discontinue MSN Messenger, the once-popular instant messaging platform first introduced back in 1999. Enjoying its heyday as a rival competitor to AOL’s expanding AIM service in the early 2000′s, MSN Messenger — or Windows Live Messenger as it cam to be known — has seen a gradual and significant fall from prominence as other modes of communication, such as Skype, have improved and evolved online chatting. All users still using the MSN Messenger platform will officially be dropped on October 31.
