i-D has released a new documentary, titled The Plastic Age, in its entirety on YouTube. The name of the short film is derived from society’s current harmful use of plastic, which unlike paper, metal, glass or wood, does not oxidize or biodegrade. Instead, it often ends up in our oceans, polluting the seas and harming marine life. Currently, the world produces 288 million tonnes of plastic a year, and the damage in the ocean can be measured by the ratio of plastic to plankton which equals “100 to 1,” largely outnumbering the crucial food source to many large aquatic organisms, such as fish and whales. The documentary is done in collaboration with G-Star RAW, and features Academy Award-nominated musician,Pharrell Williams. Hoping to alleviate the waste, the two have co-designed a new innovative solution called Bionic yarn, the world’s first denim line created from plastic that has been recycled from the ocean. The line is available for purchase at G-Star RAW. Enjoy the documentary.
