Louis Vuitton has tapped critically-lauded industrial designer Marc Newson to reimagine the iconic French fashion house’s rolling luggage for the modern traveler’s needs. Newson’s design externalizes the structure of the carry-on: the extendable cane, for example, has been relocated to the outside of the bag, freeing up crucial packing space on the inside, resulting in a 13% increase in internal volume; Vuitton’s signature Monogram canvas, meanwhile, was slimmed down by 50% in order to make the bag as light as possible without compromising the original look and feel.
As far as design inspiration goes, Newson had the following to say:
I’m obsessive about packing everything into a bag of a certain size, which is why it was so important for me to design a product that could tick all of those boxes and be the perfect piece of luggage for a person like me, [who] won’t travel with anything more than is absolutely necessary.
The bags will come in mini, cabin and maxi sizes, and all three will be available in classic Monogram Canvas and Eclipse, graphite Damier, Taiga leather and a full rainbow of seven hues of Epi leather.
