In a new interview with the New York Times, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi speak on the process of recording their just announced final A Tribe Called Quest album and reveal the title and some of the notable guests that made contributions. The album, called We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service, is due out on November 11th and will feature appearances from Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes, Elton John and Jack White. The article gives some background on how the project came about, prompted in part by the connection the group felt after their 2015 appearance on The Tonight Show, and the top secret recording sessions at Q-Tip’s New Jersey home.
Andre, Busta, Jack White and Phife’s widow Deisha Taylor are all quoted in the piece and one thing everybody seems to agree on is that Phife was in a great place when he died and his sudden turn for the worst was a big surprise to everybody. Q-Tip details how he and Phife ironed out all of their remaining static over the course of several sessions and revealed that Phife was thinking of getting a place near his own in Jersey. If that isn’t sad enough, Jarobi goes so far as to say he believes that the traveling Phife was doing between his home in Oakland and Tip’s house contributed to his death. “Doing this album killed him,” Jarobi is quoted as saying. “And he was very happy to go out like that.”
